The numbers after each apple variety indicates the pollination type. 1 being the earliest, and 8 being the latest. Most fruit trees set a better crop if pollinated by another variety and the best pollinators are those which flower at the same time, but variety in the adjacent seasons will usually also overlap sufficiently to pollinate. Thus type 3 will pollinate best with other 3’s, but will also with 2’s and 4’s.

Having said this, most suburban situations provide good pollen due to the close proximity of other gardens. The frequent presence of bees and other pollinating insects can be an adequate pollinator.

Triploids are poor pollinators for any other variety, and should be accompanied by two compatible varieties that pollinate each other.
